What are the best practices for cleaning ears?

In many ways, the human ear is self-cleaning; earwax acts as a natural lubricant that prevents dirt and debris from infiltrating the ear canal. However, excessive earwax can be problematic both due to its propensity to cause tinnitus and for overall ear health. If you’re looking to ensure your ear cleaning routine is as rigorous and beneficial as possible, here’s a few critical points to keep in mind:

DO:

  • Clean the outside of your ear with a damp cloth.
  • Use earwax softener regularly, especially if you are prone to earwax build-up.
  • You can also use olive oil drops, rather than earwax softener if you prefer.
  • You can irrigate your ears using a large syringe; this method is particularly useful 12-24 hours after using an earwax softener.
  • Seek medical advice if your ears feel “full” or uncomfortable.

DON’T:

  • Insert any foreign object – especially cotton swabs – into the ear canal itself. The ear canal is far longer than many people imagine and it’s all too easy for foreign objects to become stuck out of reach.
